Welcome to  Panhandle Junior High School

Panhandle Junior High

VapeParents,

I just wanted to find a way to inform you of a problem we are having at school and that is vaping.  Vaping involves an electronic cigarette that is filled with a liquid that contains nicotine.  The liquid smells like candy (an example would be the smell of a Jolly Rancher, and I assume that is what it tastes like).  The vapor or “smoke” has no smell so students can do it in a bathroom, classroom, bedroom, or car, and you wouldn’t notice it unless you saw the “smoke”.  This is not just a problem at PISD; it is a problem across the U.S.  The research we have done says that it is more addicting than smoking and that one pod (which are the small pieces in the photo) has as much nicotine as 20 cigarettes.  Research shows that it affects teens psychologically as well as physically. The picture below is of some vapes we have taken up at school.  The bottle is the liquid that refills the pod.  We have taken them up at the JH as well as the high school, and girls as well as boys are using them, in fact all student groups could be using a vape.

These reasons are why I am asking for your help.  Please take the time to check your child’s backpack, room, car or anywhere else you might think of for a vape.  It is much easier for you to check one than for me to check 200 backpacks and 75 cars for them.  I would also rather you find them than me.  The students have been lectured several times at school by different people and it is still a problem.  They do know that if they are caught with one, they will receive a citation and either 3 days of ISS or 2 swats.  It will affect their extracurricular activities with a suspension.  Unfortuantely, a lot of kids seem to think it is harmless and make fun of the situation, until they are caught and these consequences affect them negatively.  That is why I ask for your help.  Even if you believe there is no way your child would use this product, please check.  It is my goal to rid the community of these awful devices that have been promoted by big tobacco companies to try and hook another generation of kids on nicotine.  If you have any questions or would like to discuss the situation, please give me a call at 537-3851 or come by the office.  Thank you for your help in this matter of keeping our kids healthy
